Running a project is a hard feat in itself. Making sure all stakeholders are well-informed on the status of the deliverables, avoiding time-sucking dependency chains, sticking to deadlines and the budget, I could go on and on, you know it as well as I do.

Wouldn’t it be great to make the process just a tad easier?

Well, while I can’t run your project for you, I can arm you with some very handy tools that will turn tedious into exciting and add some flair to your project documentation:

In this piece, you’ll find a comprehensive list of the finest templates for project timelines you’ll ever see. You can download or access all of them with a single click and fill them out in minutes.

Note: in this particle, we’ll look into templates for managing the timeline of your projects. If what you’re after is a template for presenting the progress or forecasting a project, have a look at this piece covering a broader spectrum of templates: The Best Timeline Templates for 2022

The best project timeline templates for any use

four week project timeline

Four week project timeline (Free)

A basic project timeline designed to fit four-week iterations, available to download from the official Microsoft website. For a free template, it’s good enough: clear and legible, easy to work with, helps get the job done.

Editing: Excel.

Project timeline with milestones (Free)

Another free template from Microsoft, this one will work better for more advanced projects. The main feature of this project timeline template is that it allows you to follow and track milestones critical for project completion.

Open-ended project timeline

Open-ended

A nice-looking project timeline template from Venngage, one of our competitors (so I’m not THAT happy about including this one in the list). It’s got a very eye-pleasing combination of colors and comes with neat icons illustrating all of the project deliverables. It’s good for projects and processes that are always on as it comes without a deadline.

Another one from Microsoft, this one created for MS PowerPoint, it’s a very legible template for a timed product roadmapping. Good for long-term planning as it cover the whole year

gantt chart

Gantt chart

Gantt charts are a separate type of project management tools and can be very useful for certain teams, especially in Software and IT. This one is very easy to use and follow (certainly much easier than the dreaded MS Project app). Created by the Someka design studio and powered by hundred of delighted users.

Editing: Excel.

gantt chart 2

Gantt chart #2

Yet another Gantt chart in our gallery. Essentially, very similar to the previous one with slightly less advanced features and capabilities. On the flip side, though, this one can be edited in Google Sheets too, so no need to worry about that MS 365 subscription.

24-hour timeline

If you’ve been following us for the past year or so, you know very well that each of the Storydoc template galleries has to feature at least one quirky item. And that’s the one, in this case. A 24-hour timeline that comes with a nice bundle of icons and visuals. Not sure if I could find a business use for it, but hey, it’s really fun to look at!

Physical tracker

Physical tracker

One more option for those of you who’d rather have your project timeline tracker printed out than hosted digitally. A very well thought out document enabling you to manage your project’s objectives, resources, milestones, and action plans.

Wrike

Last but not least, a template straight from a dedicated project-management app, Wrike. One of many templates available in their tool, this one has been designed specifically to help those working with the most challenging kinds of projects. It comes pre-configured with 5 folders that represent project phases and tasks with dependencies that can be viewed in the Gantt chart view.
